Welcome to the AAHPA!

We are an association of municipal harbors throughout Alaska and the Fisherman’s Terminal in Seattle. We are a 501(c)(6) organization committed to our memberships’ total needs in managing and improving our public harbor facilities. In addition, we are fortunate to have strong sustaining member support comprising a suite of harbor related professions including consultants, engineers, contractors, maritime attorneys and suppliers.

Alaska has over 33,000 miles of coastline, more than the entire contiguous United States combined. The ports and harbors are the economic lifelines for the 49th State, in fact, 90% of all goods enter via a form of maritime transportation.
Many Alaska communities, like my own Juneau, is not connected to the terrestrial road system and rely on safe and secure harbor facilities for commerce, tourism, recreation and commercial fisheries. The Association has led numerous initiatives to improve, innovate and educate our members on best management practices. We meet annually in October for the AAHPA Conference to share experiences and participate with nationally renowned subject matter experts on all aspects of harbor management. The AAHPA has worked with our elected officials to draft laws providing greater governance on derelict and abandoned vessels. The Association was also paramount in working with the State Legislature to develop a matching grant program, which continues today, enabling municipalities an opportunity to recapitalize aging harbor facilities. Finally, in 2015, AAPHA has established a scholarship for graduating senior seeking vocational or marine related vocations. It is our goal and mission to make the Alaska harbor systems the best in the country. If you share that same vision you are personally welcomed and invited to join the Alaska Association of Harbormasters and Port Administrators.
